Favorite album from your favorite artist: "Knuckle Down" by Ani DiFranco (2005)
After that long post about what a great songwriter Ani is, this was a natural choice. This was released after "To the Teeth" and "Evolve" which both featured a really robust band including horns and strings. It was nice to see her reign it in a little on "Knuckle Down." It's another one that I have to listen to in succession because I love the way each song follows the last. I believe this album was also written after her divorce and the death of her father. I'm posting the first and last songs on the album which deal directly with those two subjects. The album opener is Knuckle Down which just rocks. I forgot how much I love the line, "whiskey makes me smarter."
The album ender is one of my all-time fave Ani songs. I used to hate the intro but the more I listen, the more it makes sense and at this point in my life, this song could be my anthem:

"inventing ways to play out time". OMG, that is about the best way to describe how I live life sometimes, sadly. Isn't that really all the 'get through each day' mentality is? I love that song. Ani really is a tremendous song writer, even if I can completely not understand what she's saying. Thank goodness for accompanying lyrics!
