If you want to know what makes me happy, it is the perfect mixture of butter, lemon, Dungeness crab, pasta and cheese. Oh yes, crab season is open people!

Glorious.
It takes a special movie to get me inside a theater these days. Ever since investing in a home theater system consisting of HDTV with Blu-Ray player and surround sound, there is almost no need except for the popcorn – it’s a fact microwaveable can’t compare to real movie theater popcorn!

But, last weekend we were invited to check out the new Tarantino joint, Inglorious Basterds and luckily, it was well worth the expense.

Yes, there was a lot of gratuitous violence. Yes, it was another ‘quirky’ role for Brad Pitt. Yes, there were some irritating yet trademark chapter titles. But who cares? It’s the ultimate revenge flick – a bunch of Jews get to stomp the shit out of Nazis and we all have fun watching. Not only that, Tarantino surprises by not using any of his usual crew of performers. Probably the casting departure was necessitated by the fact that two thirds of the film is in French and German, another surprise to me.
But, the biggest and best surprise was the performance of Austrian actor Christoph Waltz as a Nazi colonel. The first scene of the film is so brilliantly paced and acted… the interrogation of a French dairy farmer had me riveted. Two weiner schnitzel licking thumbs up.

The Case of The Runaway Romaine
I’m pissed. I just went to make a delicious and nutritious salad for lunch only to find out that SOME FUCKER STOLE MY LETTUCE out of the refrigerator at work.
Since I couldn’t bring myself to eat cucumbers, avocados, shrimp, and tomatoes without any green goodness to nestle them, I had to drive to Freddy’s and buy another bag of lettuce. Thus defeating the purpose of bringing my lunch today; to avoid having to get in the car in the 100° heat!
Alas, I returned shortly and stomped through the office, the Wicked Witch of the East’s theme song playing in my head. I quickly wrote my name on EVERYTHING I have to put back in the fridge.

Once I finish lunch, I think I’ll question a few suspects…

It's Tradition
My mom used to say, "When you have your own family, then you can do what you want." This usually was her final response to my whining about not wanting to go to church or a family reunion or get-together. Things we have to do because we always did them - traditions.
I guess I always knew what she meant but, since I don't have any kids of my own, I never really considered that I may have already started my own traditions. The longest standing of these, I think, is our annual camping trip with friends. This has come to be known simply as Little Fan, so named for the campground where we have spent about week for the last 5 summers.
We just got home and uploaded the photos. Here are a few of my favorites:

As usual, we ate richly, drank copiously and laughed relentlessly. We got to see friends from out of town and say a proper 'goodbye' to friends soon to leave town. The weather was a concern since last years' rainy excursion but we lucked out with a lot of sun this time, evidenced by more than a few burns.
The good thing about the bad weather last year was the addition of a new custom wherein all the campers partake in a talent show. It was such a hit that it will likely become an annual event. Though I have no photographic proof, the skills displayed were feats of magic, sing alongs, juggling, joke telling and savant-like puzzle solving skills.
The thing we look forward to most though is floating in the river. Little Fan is situated on a fork of the Clackamas and the Collawash so I'm not really sure which river it is but it's so cold that we usually don't swim so much as bob around on inflated water toys, cold beverage in hand. Seems simple but it's totally the highlight.
So now that we're home and everything is put away, as usual I am already looking forward to floating the river next year. Despite the dirt and discomfort of "roughing it," the tradition is one I cherish. And the dirt eventually washes off.
