Independence Day
Intellectually I know that America is no better than any other country; emotionally I know she is better than every other country. ~Sinclair Lewis

We’re back from a long, relaxing weekend in the mountains with the usual gang. Here are a few shots of the cabin in Welches, OR approximately half way between Portland and Hood River.
As always part of the set up with our too considerate comrades is the discussion of “who-gets-what room.” Matt and I settled on the loft at the top of the very steep stairs. Not ideal for drunken fooling around, I assure you. But the place was available and really close to town which was nice. Also the 200 ft. tall fir trees lent ample shade to the deck which was a lovely place to enjoy a cocktail and a game of Yahtzee. Also, also, the living room had a perfect dance floor. Can I just say Jane Fonda aint got a motor in the back of her Honda? You know what I'm talkin' bout.

The first night, after many recommendations and rave reviews, we stopped at the Zig Zag Inn for what was supposed to be Fantastic pizza. I didn’t find it to be anything but average, even after much drinking.

The next day we crammed all 6 adults plus Darien in to the Bills’ van for a trip to Hood River. Despite the constant breeze, it was a darn hot day but we had a picnic by the water anyway and watched some kite-boarding and windsurfing. We headed to Full Sail brewery afterward to ‘cool off’ with some much anticipated, newly released Session Black® Though I still prefer the original, the black is nice and very drinkable for a dark beer. I am sure I’ll research further.

For the actual Independence Day holiday, the girls drove to Sandy for a little shopping. We had to find salmon for our dinner feast and I was on a mission to get some red, white and blue flair in the form of a cheesy t-shirt. We were successful with the salmon; not so much with my tee but at least we avoided a parking lot brawl by speeding back to the cabin after I inadvertently hit a guy’s truck with the door to April’s new rig. Ahh… there’s really nothing more American than arguing with rednecks and making a fast getaway! Actually, I just read about a really American way to celebrate the Fourth on Phil Plait’s blog – reading the Declaration of Independence! If you’d like to give it a shot, here it is. Happy Independence Day everyone!

I meant to comment on this. My comments are always the best. Here's one.

And here's another. Consider it from April :)

I like your quote. Of course America is best! Thanks for getting so many pics of the weekend; the rest of us suck with a camera.
