Fall is Here, Hear the Yell...

Upon waking this morning, a shiver in my bones and a stiffness in my nipples alerted me to the fact that fall is upon us (yes, it is like a regular Farmer's almanac in my brassiere)!

My favorite season arrived unceremoniously this year, on the heels of a scorched grass summer. No significant rain has fallen yet but the air is ripe with the smell of it and frankly, I can't wait because artistic differences caused our garden (3 pots on the patio) to shrivel prematurely. A nice soaking might revive it enough to yield a bountiful harvest after all.

So, yes, fall; time to switch from iced mochas to pumpkin spice lattes, from blonde ales to creamy stouts. Time to let the bikini line revert to its natural, wild state. Time to watch football or to decorate the house with raffia and those little multi-colored corns.

It is also a time to put away the summer songs of bonfires and brief flings and booming bass. But in exchange for what? Are there any good "fall songs?" I find this season to be the redheaded stepchild of pop. Countless tunes have been devoted to summer's heat and winter's desolation but what of autumn's many endearing qualities, hmm?

I am taking suggestions for a fall themed mix disc. So far, this is all I can come up with:

The White Stripes - "I Can Tell That We Are Gonna Be Friends"
Nothing heralds the arrival of fall like back to school. Good thing I heard the song before I saw Napoleon Dynamite, otherwise, I would just be reminded of tater tots.

Tracy Chapman - "Let it Rain"
Because her voice is as warm and lush as a comfy flannel and because the title is a natural choice for this season in the Northwest.

Natalie Merchant - "House Carpenter"
Though it would be easy to do an entire fall mix of Celtic folk songs, this is as close as I want to get to that genre.

Radiohead - "Idioteque"
This song doesn't reall yautumne to do with autum but I like to think the English weather has seeped in to Thom Yorke's voice.

That's it, the lines are open. Come on, y'all. I figure I still have fifty five more minutes to fill...

Since we were talking about it a while ago, I vote for 'Every Day Is Like Sunday' by The Pretenders. Go ahead and disagree, but something about it makes me feel fallish. Not to be confused with making me feel tallish. Hitting my head on low-hanging tree branches does that.

No no, I do agree with that submission. Eventhough I haven't heard that particular version, I am fond of the song.

Sigh, I wish I could be around to talk about things. But I'd probably be a square, really.

I'm going to have to answer this as I come across some that actually do, because I can't think of any. How lame is that. My favorite season, and I'm blocked.

"Autumn Sweater" by Yo La Tengo from "I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One."

There hasn't been a better melancholy song written about a sweater EVER. Take that, Weezer.

OK, I can dig it.

But I think Nikki has a song about a sweater that you NEED to hear, Mike.

Did anyone else notice that Matt wrote "Me lickey?" TMI, to be sure.
