Doin' It Yourself

Since buying our house last year, I’ve probably watched over 100,000 hours of DIY Network and HGTV shows about home improvement yet spent only about 20 actual hours improving my home. Most of this has been painting and it only got done out of necessity; the previous owner had either a criminal or comical sense of color. The master bedroom was shade of teal best reserved for ‘80’s novelty shirts. The family room was a very grandmotherly dusty rose and the living room and guest bathroom were blah off-white. I still have a long way to go inside the house but with summer ending soon, I really do want to paint the exterior.

Before we moved in, we were really impressed with the crisp white and green accents. After just a short time, the white has dulled and dirtied and the green does nothing but irritate me ever since I realized my house mimics Parkrose school colors. But dudes, painting a house is no picnic. If I pick the wrong color, it’s not like a twenty dollar mistake – a five gallon bucket costs over a hundred bucks and I don’t even want to think about the cleaning and prep work involved.

Still, something had to be done so I started by at least painting the shutters, house numbers, mail box and window box a more muted, olive green. I’m pretty happy so far but it was a bitch to get in to all the crevices of the shutters. I hope I can match the house color to this because I REALLY don’t want to do that again! I got a picture with my camera phone but of course, you can’t really tell much difference from before.

Now, what to do with those hideous, circus tent looking awnings….????

Ya, Spray painting the awnings did not work so hot. If only we could dye them somehow.

You can dye them, Matt. It's called RIT.

I love the new green. And I'm totally feeling you on the whole 'I've made a huge mistake' concern with picking the wrong color to paint my house. Which is why mine, 10 years later, still needs it!
