The People’s Republic of... Portland?

I was reading this article in the Wall Street Journal wherein Russian academic and self-proclaimed brainiac, Igor Panarin shares his prediction that the US will disband, or “disintegrate” by the year 2010. Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, the plummeting economy, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Around the end of June 2010, or early July, he says, the U.S. will break into six pieces -- with Alaska reverting to Russian control and the rest of the country split between China, Mexico and the European Union.

Here’s a link for the dedicated: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123051100709638419.html

At first amused, I read on wondering what our country look like if such a split were to happen. Luckily, there was a diagram included with the article.

Above is the map of how this guy, who by all accounts seems to be a highly educated and well respected human, sees our nation’s demise. Now, I don’t think the idea itself is completely crazy. I am reminded every election year just how diametrically opposed some Americans are from their countrymen.

I take this as yet another example of how often times, highly intelligent people have no common sense. And I have to wonder, has this guy ever been to America? A five minute discussion with anyone in say, Alabama, and you’d know there’s no way The South is going to become part of Mexico. Furthermore, I don’t see Montana and Wyoming residents rushing to snuggle up with Canada any time soon. No, Mr. Panarin, no matter how smart you are, you don’t know jack about the U.S.A., comrade!

Still, if we were to suffer a total collapse, what country would be your first pick to adopt the Great Northwest?

Regardless of the fact that I am an unabashed Anglophile and therefore am biased aforethought, I think it'd have to be the UK/Ireland, by virtue of the climate, the careful politeness, and all the castles we have lying about here.

Either that or Germany...the number of microbreweries alone!
